No one could ever accuse Canada’s KATAKLYSM of being an ‘overnight sensation’. The Northern Hyperblast merchants have worked relentlessly for over a decade plying their trade and building themselves a solid reputation from the ground up.
Progressively improving from album to album, they finally managed a breakthrough of sorts with 2001s Epic (The Poetry Of War) album and its successor Shadows And Dust.
With Serenity In Fire, Maurizio Iacono and company have succeeded in going a step further and demonstrated without a doubt that they don’t need to hide behind the biggest names in the Death Metal genre. Serenity In Fire is an exercise in brutality, is technically flawless, yet at the same time there’s ample room for melody in all the right places. New drummer Martin Maurais, who had until recently been earning his keep as a drum teacher, has added another dimension to KATAKLYSM’S sound. A bit clinical sounding at times, he goes about his work with machine-like precision, on what is one of the Death Metal highlights of the year so far.
Watch out DEICIDE, MORBID ANGEL and CANNIBAL CORPSE. KATAKLYSM is setting new standards in the Death Metal genre.
