Oh here we fucking go again with the Swedish math metalcalc metal lords, Meshuggah, and yeah i know i know, im finishing up all their albums before wrapping this whole thing up hehehe, what a fucking ride its been, and i can say that Koloss is also quite the ride, its like i would call the big bang wall of sound album from Meshuggah, its visceral, its nasty, its just brutal walls of sound hitting the shore, its a blast!
So we kick off with “I Am Colossus” and this shows the new sound better, slow heavy, dreading and crescendo, its complicated but not with speed but with intricacies, its heavy but with less groove, more sharp, i wouldnt say its my fav from the album, mostly because it feels like an intro. Then “The Demon’s Name Is Surveillance” hits and WTF hahahah, it almost scares you, you get punching guitars while you get a machine gun drumming from Haake, its groovy, its a non-stop wall of sound and aggression, it doesnt stop even with the solo its dread and doom its amazing!
“Do Not Look Down” brings more groove, its like an intricate balance between the pumping bass and the drums squeezing in to fill the gaps, its super groovy, with an amazing guitar solo, all drawing out to a headbanger, nice nice. “Behind the Sun” is Kidmans track, something not seen in years, heavy as fuck! he woke up and chose violence, i wouldnt call it the most complex of tracks, but heavy as fuck and super hooky, the way it ends is a bit anticlimactic hehehe. “The Hurt That Finds You First” brings Haakes drumming all over the place, this is a hyper groove technical death metal track, omg the drums are orgasmic, this is the stuff you dream about when you start a metal band, this groove ending in a drawn out doom after all that drill uff amazing.
“Marrow” is another groove metal showpiece, its all over the place in the best way, super jazzy, seems like its almost an improv, with the time signatures misaligning, the guitars doing screeches instead of notes, the guitar solo all over the place, its like a chaotic mess, amazing. “Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion” gives you the heavy you wanted, you needed heavy, slow heavy, thats what you get here with a strangely hypnotic groove. “Swarm” well what can you expect from a song named swarm, you get swarm a crescendo of drum and stop/go that we havent seen since Chaosphere, just way more catchy, way more precise, way more details, its like a polished track, its unrelenting in all the best ways.
“Demiurge” is another amazing wall of sound, when it starts quiet and eerie with Meshuggah you know that bass/drums is gonna come hard, hide the kids! super groovy bouncy track with a tinge of dread and of course weird time signatures, maybe one of my favs of the album. “The Last Vigil” is an instrumental interlude and Meshuggah now puts the interludes at the end its a nice soothing track, maybe to calm down the nerves hehehe.
Wow what a ride, its a great album, weird in places, a bit less complicated in a lot of tracks, choosing a more groovy heavy metal sound and not so much complicated for the sake of complications, but still operatic and amazing, its so bouncy heavy and groovy, what can i say, another amazing album and another amazing listen, totally recommended.
